Burnley 2-0 Sunderland – Match Report
Two second half goals from Josh Cullen and Jaidon Anthony see Sunderland fall to their first defeat of the season against fellow newcomers, Burnley.
Mayenda had a huge opportunity in the first 5 minutes following a free-kick, as Dan Ballard headed the ball across the 6-yard box, and Eliezer Mayenda scuffed his shit from close range, and it was saved by Dubravka.
Shortly after that, Dan Ballard pulled up and was forced to be substituted, and Sunderland never seemed to get going again.
Chemsdine Talbi did have an opportunity though, as Simon Adingra played him in, but his dinked shot went just wide of the post.
Lyle Foster had a goal disallowed for Burnley, after he was ruled to have tripped up Jenson Seelt before slotting the ball past Roefs.
The Black Cats never really came out in the second half, and it took Burnley just over a minute to open the scoring.
Josh Cullen curled a shot in from the edge of the box, after a lovely flick into him by Jaidon Anthony.
Scott Parker’s side then showed why they had such an impressive defense last season, as they say behind the ball and really limited Sunderland to pretty much nothing.
As Sunderland began to really push on, Enzo Le Fee gave the ball away, giving the opportunity for Jaidon Anthony to peel away, go round Robin Roefs and finish the game off in the 88th minute.
There was 10 minutes added on, due to a floodlight failure, in broad daylight, but Sunderland looked like they had just given up by that point.
The Black Cats now sit 6th in the league, with half of the teams still to play in the coming days this bank holiday weekend.
Nwxt up for Sunderland is Huddersfield Town in the EFL Cup 2nd round, before a home match against Brentford on Saturday.
