Cardiff City 0-2 Sunderland – Match Report

2 first-half goals give Sunderland their first win in 8 matches, as they win away from home for the first time since Boxing Day.

Sunderland stay in 12th, but move to 2 points behind their opponents in 11th, and still 13 points off the top 6 and moved to 11 points away from the drop zone.

It now means that The Bluebirds have lost their last 2 games, leaving their play-off hopes in shatters, as they are now 11 points behind Norwich in 6th.

Cardiff started the game brightly, but Nat Phillips gave away a soft penalty for a challenge on Jobe after just 10 minutes.

Adil Aouchiche stepped up and struck the penalty into the top left corner to score just his 2nd goal for Sunderland.

From this point on, Sunderland dominated and Cardiff really struggled to get to grips with the game.

Adil Aouchiche was involved again as Sunderland doubled their lead after 27 minutes.

Chris Rigg found Aouchiche in behind, and he put in a delightful ball towards Jobe, who tucked it home from close range.

Jobe Bellingham scored his 7th goal of the season, the most by any player aged 18 or under in a Championship season, since Harvey Elliot scored 7 for Blackburn in the 2021-22 season.

The 18-year-old really ran the show today, even when dropping back into midfield following the introduction of Hemir late on.

Hemir had a glorious opportunity to get his first goal for the club, he ran 1-1 with the goalkeeper, but hit it straight at the ‘keeper, making it an easy save.

A much improved performance by The Black Cats, who face Blackburn Rovers on Bank Holiday Monday at 3pm at The Stadium of Light.
