Sunderland City Council has received £3.1 million in a government grand to build two new housing communities.
The funding, from the department of Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, will develop new housing sites on Carley Hill and Farringdon Row.
The Farringdon Row site is classed as derelict brownfield land, which is long been eyed for the city centre’s development plans spanning back decades.
Carley Hill on the other hand, is effectively green land, but the council have argued it constitutes brownfield land accordingly.
The council’s housing policies have been frequently criticised for carving up green land for more and more developments.
