Durham Student escapes with community order after downloading hundreds of indecent images of children

🟢 Durham student warned he faces jail after breaching sex offender rules

A 19-year-old student from Burnopfield has avoided immediate custody after breaching court orders related to child abuse image offences for the second time in two years.

Thomas David Curry was previously sentenced in July 2024 for possessing over 270 indecent and prohibited images of children. As part of that sentence, he was given a community order, placed on the sex offenders register, and made subject to a Sexual Risk Order.

But Curry returned to Durham Crown Court after using aliases to access paedophilic computer games, breaching both the Sexual Risk Order and notification requirements. More than 400 prohibited images were found on his laptop, and he was found to have played the game on at least 34 occasions.

Despite his offences passing the threshold for custody, the judge suspended a 12-month sentence for 18 months, giving Curry what was described as a final chance to engage with rehabilitation. He must complete 200 hours of unpaid work and attend 26 rehabilitation days.

Recorder Ian Mullarkey warned: “This is really your final opportunity… If you don’t comply, you’ll go to prison.”
