Everton 1-1 Sunderland (0-3 PENS) – Match Report

Robin Roefs was the hero, as he saved all 3 of Everton’s penalties in the penalty shootout out, after Enzo Le Fee’s wonder goal was cancelled out in the dying moments by a James Garner penalty.

The referee had an absolute shocker as Trai Hume was judged to have fouled Adam Aznou, despite there being little to no contact.

James Garner stepped up and scored to take the match to extra-time, despite Sunderland looking so comfortable.

The only thing missing from the performance from the Black Cats was more goals, as they looked so sharp and composed everywhere else on the pitch.

Sunderland started the game on top, and they were rewarded with an absolutely outstanding volley from Enzo Le Fee, to make amends for his failed panenka last time out, following a Nordi Mukiele long through that caused havoc in the Everton penalty area.

Sunderland did create a lot more chances than they have if late, forcing Pickford to make multiple really good saves.

They accumulated 18 shots with 6 on target overall, if it wasn’t for the England number 1, Sunderland could have ran away with it.

Granit Xhaka also came really close to winning the game at the end of extra time, after his shot that looked goal bound was deflected away by James Tarkowski.

Sunderland move on to the 4th round of the FA Cup, with the draw due to take place on Monday Evening.

Next up for the Black Cats, is Crystal Palace at home next Saturday, as they look to keep up their unbeaten start at The Stadium of Light this season.

It could have easily been Luke O’Nien, as he had a brilliant game considering it was his first start of the season, and he did not look out of place against Premier League opposition, but Robin Roefs stole the show with his amazing penalty shootout display.
