EXCLUSIVE: Ocado Announces Layoffs, full announcement email

The food delivery firm, Ocado, based in The Beam building, yesterday announced a number of layoffs, in an email shown to SGM, this is the announcement they made to their employees.

Further to my announcement yesterday afternoon, I wanted to provide you with further detail regarding the proposed changes now that we have spoken directly to all affected colleagues.

Over the last few months, Ocado Retail has been looking at how we operate and we’ve shared our new strategy across the business. Our focus is all about making sure we’re as efficient and effective as possible while giving our customers the unique Ocado experience that they love

We’ve conducted a full review looking at how we’re structured, where we could be leaner and what efficiencies we can make. We’ve already put some important measures in place:

Reflecting our reduced contact rate, we’ve paused recruitment meaning around 70 fewer people were brought into the hub

We’ve also frozen a number of support roles to support cost savings

And we’ve reduced spend in certain areas – for example we won’t be focusing on external awards or industry recognition this year

We don’t want to lose sight of some of the great results we as a team have achieved so far; however, as we enter this new phase of our strategy, we believe we still need to be leaner and bring more of our people into closer day-to-day contact with our customers.

Taking all of this on board, we’re sadly having to announce that we will be removing around 30 roles from the Customer Hub.

I know we’re a really tight team and it’s really tough to lose these valued colleagues.

To give you a little bit more detail on the restructure, we are looking at:

Reducing the number of people in our People Development Team. Instead we will be keeping quality at the forefront of what we do by bringing it into the day to day operation

Reducing the number of Senior Advisor roles

Removing a Real Time Analyst position

Changing our opening hours, resulting in the removal of our nightshift (we will now be open from 7am – 12am across all channels)

These proposed changes would take effect on 05 April.
