Grindon man “hands free on phone” during fatal collision which killed two

A Grindon man on trial for the death of two people through a collision was in a call during the time of the incident, a court has heard.

Terence Abson, 62, and Gina Lands, 56, were struck by a van being driven by Marc Large, in Carlisle, on 2 March 2021. They had crossed on a red light which turned to amber.

Marc, 49 from Gleneagles Road, denies two charges of causing death by careless driving.

The prosecution have assembled evidence including CCTV footage, as well as a call time, showing that he was on the phone, using bluetooth hands free, during the collision.

Marc argues he did not see them because of the light of the sun glaring in his eyes. His statement is “I was not distracted and my mind was on my driving.”

“I really can’t explain how this collision occurred as I never saw the couple until a split second before I hit them

The trial continues.
