A Hendon woman has avoided prison after three kittens were discovered starved to death in a shoe box in her attic in a horrific condition
Jan Marie Langridge, 36 of Noble Street had adopted a cat and seven kittens last year but was unable to look after them and left them in a filthy attic. The smell was worse than anything they had experienced before.
RSCPA inspectors told the court as they searched the attic they found overflowing litter boxes, surrounded by mouldy faeces, a bowl containing rusty water and empty feeding trays.
They rescued two cats, but then found three dead kittens in a shoebox infested with fleas and maggots. One of them had resorted to cannibalism due to hunger.
Langridge pleaded guilty to animal abuse through neglecting the cats. The court understood that because of her learning difficulties she was unable to handle them and was sorry for what she did.
She was given a suspended sentence and a lifelong ban from owning cats.
