Hollycarrside Man jailed after stealing a crate of Stella from Premier Store and racially abusing staff when they tried to stop him

A Sunderland man has been jailed after stealing a crate of Stella Artois and racially abusing staff who tried to stop him.

Carl Minto, 32, walked into a Premier store in Sunderland and told a student working there he was “just going to walk out with this” before taking the lager. When she tried to stop him, he pushed her and later shouted racist abuse at her and her parents.

Weeks later, he carried out a burglary at a stranger’s home while under the influence of alcohol.

At Newcastle Crown Court, Minto admitted two counts of racially aggravated assault and one of burglary. He was also in breach of a previous suspended sentence for unlawful wounding.

The judge jailed him for 10 months and imposed a three-year restraining order.

Minto told the court he is now sober and “the only way is up.”
