Homeless man avoids jail after shoplifting spree in The Bridges and Greggs

A homeless man living in Sunderland has avoided jail after he engaged in a shoplifting spree in The Bridges, raiding several stores including HMV and Greggs.

Barry Bartram, 46 was already serving a suspended sentence for carrying a knife in public.

However because the court decided he was vulnerable, and despite the penalty for a suspended sentence being to then serve that sentence, the court ultimately decided to extend the suspension rather than send him to prison.

He nonetheless must pay a £154 victim surcharge and £85 court costs and pay a total of £83 compensation to Greggs
