Man avoids jail after assaulting two neighbours, racially abusing police officer he wrongly thought wasn’t white and chanting Tommy Robinson’s name at him
🟢 A Jarrow man has avoided jail after assaulting two neighbours and racially abusing a police officer during a violent outburst last summer.
David Corkin, 54, of Naworth Terrace, launched the attack during a gathering on June 24, 2024, when friendly banter turned aggressive. He punched a male neighbour in a “pre-emptive strike” and then pushed a woman to the ground by her throat. She reported struggling to breathe and later vomiting from the trauma.
The woman, who sustained a chipped tooth, said she now feels unsafe in her home. The male victim suffered facial swelling and bruising.
After being arrested, Corkin racially abused a police officer, wrongly assuming he wasn’t white based on his appearance. He chanted the name of far-right figure Tommy Robinson and made offensive comments. The officer, who is white, described the language as “foul and disgusting”.
Corkin admitted two assaults, strangulation, and racially aggravated harassment. He was sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court to 12 months, suspended for 18 months, with 150 hours of unpaid work. He must also pay £1,000 compensation to the woman and £500 to the man.
The court heard he was drunk and on drugs at the time, but has since turned his life around and now lives peacefully near the victims.
