Man Jailed After Trying to Strangle Partner in “Terrifying” Attack

A Gateshead man has been jailed after violently strangling his girlfriend, leaving her with PTSD, depression and a lasting fear he would return.

Brandon Holmwood, 28, launched the attack in April last year after his partner told him to leave her home and began packing his belongings. Drunk and enraged, he smashed her TV before pinning her to the bed with both hands around her throat, restricting her breathing.

She only escaped when she managed to kick him off. Holmwood then shouted, “This is what you make me do,” before grabbing her hand and hitting her with it.

Newcastle Crown Court heard the victim has lived in “constant apprehension” since the attack, fearing he would show up again. She has received counselling and described the emotional and psychological impact as “significant.”

Holmwood denied intentional strangulation but was convicted after trial. He has now been jailed for 21 months and handed a 10‑year restraining order banning any contact with the victim.
