Man jailed after using aerosol can to spray flames at police officer
A Newcastle man who used an aerosol can to spray flames towards a police officer has been jailed for 12 months.
Kane Sams, 35, of Oabam House, Dunholme Road, Elswick, barricaded himself inside a room and threatened to burn the property down before attacking staff and police officers during a standoff on October 7.
Newcastle Crown Court heard Sams used an aerosol can to spray flames toward a firearms officer, forcing them to jump back for safety. He also threw glasses, plates, and talcum powder, before hurling a half-full can of cider from a window — hitting another officer’s wrist.
The incident caused around £700 in damage. Sams admitted three counts of assaulting an emergency worker, common assault, affray, criminal damage, and threatening to damage property.
Defending, Andrew Walker said Sams had been drinking and taking drugs, and recognised his behaviour as “self-defeating.”
Judge Stephen Earl sentenced him to 12 months in prison, describing his actions as dangerous and reckless.
