New Mural Revealed for Millfield Metro Station which symbolises the decline and revival of Sunderland

A new mural has been revealed for Millfield Metro Station commissioned and funded by Sunderland Culture

The mural, titled: “Hopes and Fears” was created by Scottish Artist Chad McCail and was designated to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Tyne & Wear Metro.

The mural continues some unusual themes, including the dead rising from their graves, which symbolises the death and rebirth of Sunderland in coming to terms with its industrial past.

As stated by Chad on the Sunderland Culture Website: “The theme of the mural is community and the value of relationships. It will take the form of a storyboard which will wind across the wall telling a story in pictures.

While I was working in Sunderland it became apparent how much nostalgia there is for the industrial past and an understanding that there was then a more cohesive community life.

In the story long dead miners and shipyard workers rise from their graves. They are shocked by what has become of their city and they inspire the residents to begin to create a better world”
