NEWS: Teen’s Firefighter Dreams Crushed After being punched in the face outside of Gatsby in Sunderland city centre

A teenager’s hopes of becoming a firefighter have been shattered after he suffered a serious eye injury during a violent, unprovoked attack in Sunderland city centre.

The 18-year-old victim was assaulted outside Gatsby, a bar in the city, on 1 July 2023. Newcastle Crown Court heard that Leon Appleton, 21, launched the attack without warning, punching the victim around 10 times in the head and face.

Prosecutors said the young man had “no chance to defend himself” and was left with a detached retina requiring multiple surgeries.

The court heard that the victim had first noticed Appleton and another man staring at him while he was talking to a woman in a nearby bar. He later moved to Gatsby with a friend, where Appleton approached him aggressively and asked him to step outside. Believing he had done nothing wrong and having never been in a fight before, the victim agreed—only to be subjected to the violent assault moments later.

In a statement read to the court, the teenager said the attack had robbed him of his future career and left him feeling like he had lost “the best days of his young adult life.” He said he no longer felt like the confident person he once was.

Appleton, of Spruce Court in Shildon, claimed he could not remember the incident. Recorder Toby Hedworth KC rejected that account and described the attack as “gratuitous violence” against a completely blameless young man.

“You should be utterly ashamed of yourself,” the judge told him.

Appleton, who has a previous conviction for affray, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm. He was sentenced to 21 months in prison, suspended for two years, along with requirements to work with probation to address his behaviour. Recorder Hedworth said he believed immediate custody could increase the risk of further violence, and that rehabilitation would better protect the public.
