NHS 999 Call Handlers Quitting in Droves Over Stress and Trauma, Union Warns

A new report from Unison reveals nearly 1 in 3 NHS ambulance call handlers have left their roles in the past three years due to relentless pressure, emotional trauma, and lack of support.

Staff described dealing with daily calls involving suicides, stabbings and cardiac arrests, with many feeling powerless amid delays in ambulance responses. Some took over 50 sick days a year due to burnout.

The union is urging urgent action to address the emotional toll on control room workers, calling it an overlooked crisis in the NHS.
