North East Combined authority announces £8.6 million in funding to extend the Metro to Washington

The North East Combined authority has announced £8.6 million in new funding to extend the Metro to Washington.

The announcement was made by mayor Kim McGuiness on her twitter account.

For years unfulfilled pledges of expanding the Tyne and Wear Metro have been made, proposing to reactivate mothballed routes such as the Leamside line, which heads over the historic Victoria Viaduct.

However, the Mayor described it as a “long term project” but emphasised that “we’re getting started.”
