The North East of England is the name for the region of the United Kingdom which extends down from the River Tweed on the Scottish border to the River Tees in North Yorkshire. Historically known as Northumbria, the North East boasts an incredible historical legacy as England’s frontier region which became an industrial giant in the modern era through its coalmining, shipbuilding and steelmaking.
Split almost entirely between the historical two counties of Northumberland and Durham, the bulk of the North East’s population is situated in three conurbations named after its most prominent rivers: Wearside, Tyneside and Teesside the largest settlement of each being Sunderland, Newcastle and Middlesbrough. Thus, separate from Sunderland, this guide devotes itself to exploring this magnificent region.
