The following roads in North East are set to CLOSE due to Roadworks

Several road closures and traffic restrictions are in place across the North East this week. Some routes are fully closed, while others have lane restrictions or temporary traffic measures. Here are the latest updates by area:

Sunderland

• Temporary traffic lights are in operation on Hay Street at Easington Street due to electricity works. The restrictions will remain until July 8.
• Traffic is being managed with vehicles taking turns on East Law at A694 due to electricity works. The measures are expected to continue until July 8.
• Temporary traffic lights are affecting Oxford Street at Stratfield Street due to gas main works. The restrictions will remain in place until 5pm on July 20.
• Mowbray Road is closed in both directions between Salem Street South and Suffolk Street due to roadworks. The closure is expected to remain until December 31.
• Easington Street is closed in both directions from Wilson Street North to Hay Street due to roadworks. The closure will continue until April 13, 2027.
• A further closure is also in place on Easington Street between Millennium Way and Hay Street due to roadworks. The restrictions are expected to remain until January 9, 2029.

Newcastle

• Closed in both directions for roadworks between B1600 Forth Banks and Shot Factory Lane until July 10.
• Temporary traffic lights are in place on Church Road between Clarks Hill Walk and Almshouses while gas main works are carried out. Restrictions remain until July 13.
• Traffic is being managed with alternating flow on Ennerdale Road at Corby Gardens due to gas main works. In place until July 14.
• Temporary traffic lights are operating on the A187 Fossway at Westbourne Avenue while gas main works continue. Drivers should expect delays until July 17.
• Temporary traffic lights remain on the A6085 Newburn Road between Station Road and Chapel Court for gas main works until July 24.
• A separate set of temporary traffic lights is also in operation on the A6085 Newburn Road at Station Road due to gas main works, remaining until July 24.
• One lane is closed near the A167(M) because of roadworks. Motorists should allow extra time for delays. Restrictions are due to end at 4pm on July 27.
• Temporary traffic lights are controlling traffic on Brunton Lane between Epsom Court and Fawdon Walk while electricity works take place. Until July 29.
• Gas main works have temporary traffic lights in operation on Millfield Lane between Church Road and Berkley Street until July 30.
• Temporary traffic lights are in place on the A186 Westgate Road at Lewis Drive due to roadworks. Restrictions continue until August 25.
• Temporary traffic lights are operating at Hawthorn Square while roadworks are carried out. Scheduled to remain until 5pm on August 31.
• The eastbound carriageway is closed between Pilgrim Street and Carliol Street for roadworks until October 9.
• Southbound traffic is diverted as the road is closed between New Bridge Street West and Swan House Roundabout until October 9.
• Temporary traffic lights remain in place at Strawberry Lane while roadworks continue. Restrictions last until February 27, 2027.
• The one-way section between Pilgrim Street and Carliol Square is closed because of ongoing roadworks until April 10, 2027.
• Closed in both directions between Armstrong Road / Whitehouse Road and Walwick Fell while roadworks are completed. The closure remains until July 18, 2027.
• Roadworks have reduced traffic to narrower lanes with one lane closed and a 30mph speed limit in both directions between the A167(M) in Newcastle and Church Street in Gateshead. Drivers should expect delays. Restrictions are due to stay in place until June 16, 2028.

Gateshead

• Temporary traffic lights are in operation on Coldstream Drive between Lyndhurst Close and Scotland Head while telecoms work is carried out. Restrictions remain until July 14.
• Closed in both directions overnight for roadworks between the A167 Gateshead Highway and Shelley Drive. Closures are in place daily from 9:57pm to 6am until 6am on July 15.
• Closed in both directions between the A167 Gateshead Highway and Arthur Street due to ongoing roadworks. The closure remains until July 16.
• One lane is closed in both directions between Camilla Street and the A167 Gateshead Highway while roadworks continue. Drivers should expect delays. Although the roundabout beneath the flyover is closed, access between Sunderland Road and Old Durham Road remains available. Restrictions are in place until July 16.
• Closed in both directions between Swinburne Place and Lambton Street because of roadworks. The closure is scheduled to remain until October 2.
• Closed in both directions between B1426 High Street West and A184 Park Lane as major demolition works on the flyover continue. Restrictions are expected to remain until May 18, 2027.

South Tyneside

• Traffic is being controlled with vehicles taking turns on Jervis Street due to telecoms works between Eton Square and Gladstone Street. The restrictions will remain in place until 5pm on July 6.
• Temporary traffic lights are in operation on B1298 Abingdon Way at Witney Way due to water main works. The works are expected to continue until July 17.
• Temporary traffic lights are affecting traffic on A185 Jarrow Road at Pilgrims Way due to ongoing roadworks. Restrictions will remain until 5pm on July 17.
• River Drive is closed in both directions due to roadworks between B1303 and Salem Street. The closure is expected to last until August 31.
• Roadworks on B1298 Abingdon Way between Witney Way and A184 Newcastle Road have led to temporary traffic lights and possible delays. The restrictions are expected to remain until 5pm on December 18.
• Temporary traffic lights are also in place on Didcot Way at B1298 Abingdon Way due to roadworks. The measures will remain until 5pm on December 18.

Northumberland

• Temporary traffic lights are in place on A192 Station Road due to water main works between Double Row and Blackhaugh Drive. The restrictions will remain until July 8.

• Backstone Road is closed in both directions between Gill Side View and Hardys Corner due to electricity works. The closure is expected to remain until August 4.
• Traffic is being controlled with vehicles taking turns on Pleasant View due to electricity works. Restrictions will remain until August 10.
• Temporary traffic lights are affecting A690 High Street North between Meadow Rise (Meadowfield) and Lobley Hill Road (Langley Moor) due to roadworks. Drivers should expect delays until August 28.
