UPDATED: Police issue statement after remains recovered on Ryhope Beach

Northumbria Police have issued a statement following a report of what was believed to be human remains on Ryhope beach.

The remains, as shown to SGM in a photograph, were found on Wednesday by a 15 year old girl.

The photograph depicts what appears to be a jawbone with teeth missing, but has been subject to some amount of sea based erosion indicating the passage of time.

However, a statement from Northumbria Police has confirmed they were not human. A statement reads:

“At about 9pm yesterday (Wednesday) we were alerted by a member of the public who reported they had found a suspected human bone on Ryhope beach.

“Officers attended the scene and the bone was submitted for further testing. It has since been confirmed that the bone is not human.

“We would like to thank the member of the public who reported the discovery in good faith.”

SGM now believes the remains in fact belong to a seal.
