Portsmouth 1-3 Sunderland – Match Report

The Black Cats remain top of the league thanks to, yet another, emphatic display against Pompey in front of a sold out away end.

Sunderland are now 2 points clear at the top of the table, but Watford have a game in hand and they have also won all 3 of their games so far.

Despite having more possession, Pompey were unable to create any major chances, but Sunderland gave them a helping hand right at the end, when O’Nien fluffed his header into the back of his own net.

It didn’t matter too much, as The Black Cats dominated proceedings before that and they were 0-3 up in just 56 minutes.

Pompey right-back, Zak Swanson opened the scoring for Sunderland in a comical fashion.

Some wonderful build-up play on the right side from Chris Rigg and Patrick Roberts created a chance for Eliezer Mayenda, but his shot was saved by the ‘keeper.

The ball came out to Jordan Williams, and he tried to clear the ball, but he fired it against Swanson and the ball went into their own net.

Sunderland started the 2nd half meaning business, and scored twice in the opening 11 minutes.

Patrick Roberts, yet again found his way to the bi-line and pulled the ball back to Mayenda, who’s tame shot was helped home by Alan Browne to score his first for the club.

Minutes later, Luke O’Nien and Chris Rigg put in 2 feisty, but fair challenges to win the ball back, and Mayenda broke away before setting up Romaine Mundle for his 2nd goal in 2 matches since being brought into the starting 11 after the sale of Jack Clarke.

Regis Le Bris keeps his 100% record in the league for Sunderland, could this be the year Sunderland get back into the Premier League?
