Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Sunderland (1-2) – Match Report

Report

Sunderland will make their way to Wembley Stadium on the 21st May to play Wycombe Wanderers in the League One play-off final thanks to a 93rd minute goal from Patrick Roberts.

The Black Cats’ managed the game brilliantly in the first half as Sheffield Wednesday really struggled to create any major chances.

The only shot on target came from a over-head kick from George Byers which went straight at Anthony Patterson on the 35th minute.

The Owl’s started to take control in the second half but again, without creating any real chances.

The second 45 was very scrappy with a lot of stoppages which seemed to suit Sunderland for the majority of the half.

However, Wednesday’s chances eventually prevailed in the 74th minute when Barry Bannan played a brilliant ball in behind for Marvin Johnson who squared it across for a tap-in for Lee Gregory.

The Black Cats’ never let their heads drop as we entered 10 minutes of injury-time.

Out of nowhere, Jack Clarke gets the ball on the left and drives to the by-line and plays the ball across to Patrick Roberts who smashed it in to the back of the net to send Sunderland back to Wembley once again!

My Views

Thank goodness for that!

I thought we managed the game well for the most part but we fell asleep for their goal and thankfully it didn’t cost us.

Bailey Wright was immense once again!

GIVE HIM A NEW CONTRACT.

I was screaming at the TV to get Neil to make some changes once they scored but that’s why he’s a professional and I’m not!

The lads did great and we deserved it.

Player Ratings

Anthony Patterson 7

Did well when called upon. Couldn’t do much for their goal.

Lynden Gooch 8

I thought he defended brilliantly throughout.

Bailey Wright 10

He was a monster tonight and he wouldn’t let anything past him.

Danny Batth 8

Did great for the most part. I thought he could have done slightly better tracking Gregory for their goal but who cares.

Dennis Cirkin 8

Similar to Gooch on the other side. Showed great bravery to get his head on the ball whilst laid on the floor in the first half.

Corry Evans – 8

Another great game carrying on his great form at the end of the season. Never allowed Wednesday to play in the middle of the park.

Luke O’Nien 6

Battled well defensively but I thought he was slightly sloppy on the ball.

Patrick Robert 7

Quieter than he was in the first leg but did well to find the space in the box to score the winner.

Alex Pritchard 7

Tried his best to work for the team throughout but was never given the chance to play the game to his ability.

Jack Clarke 7

Quiet at times but worked very hard defensively. Did fantastic to create the winner.

Ross Stewart 7

He was constantly closing their back 4 down and gave his all despite not having any chances on goal.

Jay Matete 6

Did what he could to secure the victory after coming on late.

Nathan Broadhead 6

Similar to Matete.

Callum Doyle 6

Didn’t touch the ball after coming on.
