Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer says he wants to “back Britain’s pubs to thrive” as the government launches a four-week review aimed at relaxing licensing laws for pubs and bars.
Speaking during his trip to India, Starmer said:
“Pubs and bars are the beating heart of our communities. This review is about cutting red tape, boosting footfall, and making it easier for venues to host events that bring people together.”
The government says it wants to “tear up outdated licence requirements” that have limited outdoor dining, live music, and opening hours — with landlords and punters invited to give their views.
Hospitality leaders, including Greene King CEO Nick Mackenzie, have welcomed the move, urging ministers to move quickly to help pubs tackle rising costs and staffing pressures.
