Statue of former council leader Paul Watson to be built in Keel Square

A statue of former city leader Paul Watson is to be built in Keel Square, council chiefs have confirmed.

Watson, a former shipyard worker, was leader of the council from 2008 to 2017 before he passed away from bowel cancer.

Now, to honour his legacy in spearheading the city’s regeneration, a bronze statue of him is set to be erected in the very square that was built through his leadership.

The a sculpture firm titled A. P. R. Fulton designers has been awarded the contract to construct the piece.

A road in the city, running up to the Northern Spire, is already named “Paul Watson Way” after him.
