Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle – Match Report
Newcastle’s £70m prolific striker scores a brilliant header to hand Sunderland all 3 points in the first Wear-Tyne Derby in the Premier League for 9 years.
The Black Cats go 10 league matches unbeaten against the Magpies and earn the bragging rights.
Sunderland started the game strongly, creating a few half chances and really getting stuck in, with Newcastle struggling to really get a foot hold of the game.
The Magpies defended well, and Sunderland did struggle to force Aaron Ramsdale to make any real saves in the first half.
However, just seconds into the second-half, similar to Bournemouth a couple weeks ago, Sunderland scored.
This time, Nick Woltemade threw his head at Nordi Mukiele’s cross and the ball looped over Aaron Ramsdale, off the woodwork and in.
Sunderland came close to doubling their lead later in the game when Wilson Isidor chested down Alderete’s pass and volleyed towards the near post, forcing a good save by Ramsdale.
Robin Roefs wasn’t really forced into any major saves himself, but he commanded his area absolutely brilliantly.
He came out, caught every ball, no matter who was in his way, it was fantastic to see.
There was quite a few handbags at the end of the game as the tensions started to boil over, with a few players getting carded, proper derby.
Sunderland now move up to 7th in the table, 4 points above Newcastle, who still sit in the bottom half of the table in 12, 4 points behind the Mackems.
MoTM – Robin Roefs
