Sunderland 5-1 Cambridge UTD – WOW!

Sunderland hammered 10-man Cambridge 5-1 to climb up to 4th in the League 1 table this afternoon.

After just 12 minutes, Cambridge tried to clear the ball but it hit O’Nien and looked like it was going to fall to Ross Stewart, who was brought down by Lloyd Jones and a penalty and red card was given.

Ross Stewart stepped up to take the penalty and confidently dispatched it to the ‘keeper’s right.

Sunderland then went 2-0 up after Callum Doyle got brought down near the right-hand side corner flag and a free-kick was given.

Elliot Embleton somehow managed to catch out the ‘keeper and find the back of the net from a tight angle.

Less than 1 minute later Cambridge found a goal back as Paul Digby was able to punt the ball past Anthony Patterson.

6 minutes later Ross Stewart got his second goal with a fabulous finish on the volley which was assisted by a Lynden Gooch cross to make it 3-1.

In the second half, The Black Cats’ came out fast and got their 4th goal of the afternoon with a header by Nathan Broadhead which was assisted by a brilliant cross again from Gooch.

20 minutes before the end, Sunderland got a corner and Alex Pritchard took it short to Roberts who put in a perfect cross on to the head of Danny Batth to make it 5-1!

My Views

I am over the moon!

What a performance that was!

I have got to admit that I thought the red card was harsh, however it’s about time we had a bit of luck.

Our goal difference looks a lot better after that and in my opinion, in the form we are in I can’t see us missing out on play-offs.

It’s a huge game on Tuesday for our last home game of the season against Rotherham United and a win will all but secure that play-off place!

Player Ratings

Anthony Patterson 6

Didn’t have much to do.

Went off early due to injury.

Bailey Wright 7

Looked comfortable at the back. Confident performance.

Danny Batth 8

Similar to Wright. Took his goal well.

Lynden Gooch 9

Best performance in a long, long time. Had his marker on toast throughout and I can’t remember him putting one bad ball in. Brilliant!

Corry Evans 9

His best game in a Sunderland shirt. He controlled the game throughout and for once he was looking forward to attack everytime we had the ball.

Luke O’Nien 7

A quiet game from the midfeilder, however he battled well and won the ball back for us a few times.

Elliot Embleton 8

Another positive performance from Embleton and another fantastic goal. Well, if he meant it.

Patrick Roberts 7

Quiet at times with alot of our play coming from the other side with Gooch. Put in a brilliant cross for Batth’s goal.

Nathan Broadhead 8

Looked bright throughout and took his goal well once again.

Ross Stewart 8

It was good to see him back on the scoresheet. He was also unlucky not to get his hat-trick, nevertheless a great performance.

Callum Doyle 8

Came on for Winchester early on. He looked comfortable and like he’d never been away.

Alex Pritchard 6

Quiet after coming on hopefully he’s getting his fitness back.

Dan Neil 6

Looked confident when he came on. Didn’t need to do too much with the game out of reach for Cambridge.
