Concerns have been raised in Sunderland over the growing exclusion of older residents from city parking facilities due to the removal of cash payment options. Conservative Councillor Lyall Reed has criticised the council’s shift to cashless-only systems, saying it unfairly penalises those without smartphones or who are uncomfortable using parking apps.
The transition to the RingGo app for on-street and council car park payments has eliminated the option for cash or even card-based transactions at many locations. Cllr Reed, who represents St Michael’s Ward, said dozens of constituents have contacted him with complaints, particularly older residents who feel increasingly restricted from accessing key areas of the city.
“This is not just an inconvenience—it’s a barrier to their independence and mobility,” said Cllr Reed. “We need a system that works for everyone, not just those who are tech-savvy. For many, cash remains king.”
Cllr Reed is calling on Sunderland City Council to reinstate cash-compatible parking machines in essential locations and introduce alternative methods for non-digital users. He warns that the current system risks excluding some of the most vulnerable members of the community.
The concerns come amid wider issues with parking access and safety in the city, with Cllr Reed also campaigning for School Streets schemes to improve conditions around schools in his ward.
He urged the council to take swift action to ensure parking accessibility remains inclusive for all residents.
