Thorney Close paedophile who raped his own daughter dies of cancer in Prison

A Sunderland paedophile who raped his own daughter has died of throat cancer in Prison.

Michael Warrener was jailed for 19 years in May 2012 after being convicted of sexual offences. The BBC previously reported how he repeatedly raped his daughter Claire Warrener, who later killed herself.

Claire, who was in her early 20s, took her own life in 2010, months after reporting the abuse. Newcastle Crown Court heard how it had started when she was around 13 years old.

Warrener, then 59, denied nine counts of rape and indecent assault, but was found guilty by a jury at the court in Newcastle. The charges included indecent assaults on two other child victims.

Warrener, formerly of Twickenham Road, Thorney Close, served seven years of his sentence at HMP Durham before being moved to HMP Holme House in Stockton in July 2019.

It has now been revealed that on June 26 last year, he died of recurrent squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx (throat cancer), aged 70

A report by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman reveals how Warrener was initially diagnosed with cancer in his tonsils – a type of head and neck cancer – in 1997 and the disease was treated with surgery.

Then, in October 2016, he was diagnosed with cancer of the larynx (throat), heart failure, hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) and epilepsy.
