Three people already jailed for role in Sunderland unrest now facing additional charge of “riot” and up to ten additional years in prison

Three people, all of who are already jailed, are to appear at Newcastle Crown Court charged with riot after scenes of mass disorder in Sunderland city centre.

The riot broke out in protest of the stabbing of three young girls in Southport, in an attack which is now acknowledged to be motivated by terrorism.

A large number of people have already been jailed for the unrest, prompting criticism of the criminal justice system for the perceived harshness of the sentences.

Now, these three people, all who have already been jailed for two years for their participation, are facing additional charges of “riot” which could extend their sentence.

This includes Riley Adey, 19; 43-year-old Leanne Hodgson and 29-year-old Josh Kellett.

The trio appeared at Sunderland magistrates on Wednesday.

The three spoke only to confirm their date of birth.

No pleas were entered and the cases against them were committed to Newcastle Crown Court, where they are due to appear on November 29.

All three were granted unconditional bail, which is effectively meaningless given they are already serving custodial sentences.
