UK: Teenager found guilty of murdering four month old baby dealing “catastrophic brain injuries”

A teenager has been found guilty of killing a four-month-old baby.

Carl Alesbrook, now 19, was accused of murdering Elijah Shemwell at an address in Belper, Derbyshire.

Elijah suffered limb and rib fractures caused by being shaken by his mother’s ex-partner, jurors at Derby Crown Court were told.

He also had “catastrophic” brain injuries and was found in cardiac arrest on 2 January 2022, dying in hospital three days later.

Alesbrook was charged with one count of murder and two counts of grievous bodily harm related to the alleged attacks on Elijah.

One count of grievous bodily harm was withdrawn by judge Mr Justice Jeremy Baker due to lack of sufficient evidence, on which he asked the jury to find the defendant not guilty.

Alesbrook denied murder and GBH between 18 November 2021 and 2 January 2022.
