A Washington man attacked two shopkeepers with a knife when they tried to stop him stealing, leaving one needing 25 stitches.
James Cooper attacked the village store in Donwell, Washington last year and sought to steal bottles of spirits.
The store owner confronted him and he got him into a headlock and slashed his face with a knife.
His wife then tried to intervene to save him, only to be slashed in the arm too.
Cooper pleaded guilty to theft and two charges of wounding with intent, he was subsequently sentenced to 7 and a half years in prison.
The judge ruled that Cooper has a high risk of serious harm to members of the public. He is suffering from schizophrenia, alcohol and drug addictions.
