West Bromwich Albion 0-1 Sunderland – Match Report

A wonderful Pierre Ekwah strike was enough to give Sunderland all 3 points against 10-man WBA.

Sunderland earned just their 3rd win in 13 matches against play-off chasing WBA at The Hawthorns.

Brandon Thomas-Asante received 2 yellow cards in the space of 2 minutes for late challenges on Jack Clarke and Dan Ballard.

It was an event that did not reflect the majority of the first-half, as it was a cagey affair up until that moment.

The majority of the play came from West Brom desperately trying to breakdown a stubborn Sunderland defense, with very little success.

Just a few minutes after the red card, and seconds before half-time, Sunderland took the lead.

Callum Styles whipped in a corner-kick, and it fell to Ekwah in the centre of the box, who hit it first time, guiding the ball into the top corner.

Sunderland were able to hold out for the result, relatively comfortably, with the help of Thomas-Asante’s dismissal.

Callum Styles came very close to doubling the score late on, as he cut inside and hit a curling shot which was whiskers away from the far post.

The Black Cats stay 13th, but a win next time out against Millwall at The Stadium of Light could see them rise up to 11th.

WBA stat 5th, but are now 7 points clear of Hull City in 7th, but The Tigers have 1 game in hand.
