The Black Cats travel down to the DW Stadium to face a struggling Wigan side as they hope to push on after an impressive victory over Blackburn Rovers last time out.

The Boxing Day clash was won by Sunderland thanks to a dramatic late winner by Ellis Simms in front of over 43,000.

Wigan were hammered against Middlesbrough on Boxing Day, as they were on the receiving end of a 4-1 defeat thanks to a hat-trick by Chuba Akpom.

Sunderland are currently just 1 point away from the Play-Off places and they could move as high as 4th, depending on the other results.

Wigan have won just 1 of their last 5 league games, as they sit 23rd in the league, and if they fail to earn at least a point, they could drop down to the bottom.

The Latics also have a few ex-Sunderland players in their squad, who will be hoping to get one over on their former club.

These players are; Max Power, Nathan Broadhead, Charlie Wyke, Ashley Fletcher and James McClean.

The last time Sunderland faced Wigan at the DW Stadium, they came out 3-0 winners thanks to a brace from Ross Stewart.

Aji Alese will not be making the trip to Wigan due to injury, Danny Batth and Lynden Gooch could be in contention.
