Woman faces sentencing after dog found dead and starved in home in filthy conditions

A South Shields woman is facing a possible prison sentence after police discovered a dead, severely underweight dog in a cage at her home.

Officers were called to the property on Broad Landing following concerns from neighbours who believed a dangerous dog — and possibly a deceased animal — was inside.

When officers entered the home of Leigh Milligan, 21, they found what was described in court as a chaotic and filthy environment. A small dog named Narla, reported to be a Sherpa-type breed, was discovered dead in a cage with no bedding. The animal was said to be extremely emaciated with overgrown claws.

Two other dogs were also found in the property. While they were said to be in good health, the home was so cluttered that the animals struggled to find clear floor space to move around.

Milligan was arrested at the scene. During her police interview, she initially denied neglecting the animal, but later changed her plea in court.

Appearing at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court, she admitted a single charge relating to failing to ensure the welfare of an animal—an offence that carries a starting point of 18 weeks in custody.

Prosecutor Clare Haswell told the court that evidence suggested “prolonged or deliberate neglect,” adding that the Crown would also seek an order banning Milligan from keeping animals in the future.

The court heard that Milligan claimed financial hardship prevented her from taking the deceased dog to a vet. She also admitted she had been unable to cope with caring for the animals.

Defence solicitor Nick Moore said his client had not intended to harm the dog and had tried to feed it chicken and rice, but accepted she was unable to meet the animal’s needs. He described Milligan as remorseful and inexperienced.

Magistrates adjourned sentencing until Thursday, January 22, requesting a pre-sentence report. Milligan was released on conditional bail with an order not to keep animals in the meantime.

A ruling on whether she will face a banning order is expected at the next hearing.
