Northumbria Police have released CCTV footage after a Sainsbury’s staff member was injured when a customer threw a glass jar and a box of fruit at her.
The incident happened in South Shields, when three people were asked to leave the Binchester Street premises.
A female member of staff was then assaulted and sustained bruising and swelling after being punched.
Officers investigating the shop assault have today released an image of a woman who they would like to trace. She was in the area at the time and could have information which assists police with their investigation.
A statement from Northumbria Police said: “Shortly after 8.10pm on Monday, September 18, it was reported that two women and a man had been asked to leave Sainsbury’s on Binchester Street by a member of staff. One of the women from the group has then proceeded to throw items at the female member of staff – including a glass jar of coffee and a box of fruit. She has then proceeded to punch the victim on the side of her head, causing bruising and swelling.
“The group has then fled the premises on foot towards Wenlock Road. The victim was left shaken as a result of the assault, and the incident was later reported to police who launched an investigation. Today (Thursday), as part of their ongoing inquiries, officers have now identified a woman who they would like to speak to in connection with the report.”

The woman, or anyone who recognises her, is asked to contact police via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of the Northumbria Police website or by calling 101 quoting crime number 117675M/23.
