This disastrous Sunderland manager has received an OBE in the new year honours list
A former Sunderland manager who had a disastrous tenure on Wearside has been awarded an OBE in the new year’s honours list.
Howard Wilkinson, now 80 years old, received the award for his services to football. Although he has been individually a relatively honourable person, SAFC fans may beg to differ.
While Wilkinson was a successful manager who once headed the England national team and is known as being the last English manager who won the top flight, at the Stadium of Light, he is otherwise remembered as one of the club’s worst ever managers of modern times who was instrumental in the club’s 19 point relegation season from 2002-2003, having replaced Peter Reid.
Those services to football definitely don’t extend to SAFC!
