Video goes viral of man arrested for allegedly carrying knife outside Washington pub

A video has been widely shared on social media showing a man being arrested after a standoff with police outside of a Washington pub.

The video, which purportedly took place on yesterday evening outside of the Ox & Plough pub in Oxclose, Washington, shows a young man in a hoodie confronted by a police officer with a taser.

The officer shouts at him and demands he gets on his knees and puts his hands on his head, before he reluctantly complies and is handcuffed.

Washington has recently been gripped by fears of a man walking around allegedly carrying a machete, which prompted some schools in the area to take safeguarding measures yesterday.

This new incident is not thought to be related, but nonetheless shines a light on the growing problem of knife crime in the region, which according to Northumbria Police statistics has grown by over 50% since 2020 to amount to over 1000 different cases by the end of 2023.
