County Durham shop worker caught with haul of fake cigarettes in Sports Direct bag

Sharmeran Hussin, 25, was working at Shildon Mini Market when he was found with a Sports Direct bag filled with fake cigarettes and tobacco during a visit by Trading Standards officers. Despite being warned it was a criminal offence, he was caught again just weeks later selling more illegal products.

Durham Crown Court heard that in total, multiple test purchases were made from the store, and CCTV later showed Hussin running with a holdall. A further stash of counterfeit tobacco was later found in his car.

Hussin, of Darlington, admitted conspiracy to supply goods with an unauthorised trademark. He required an interpreter during court proceedings and claimed he acted under the direction of others.

He was given a conditional discharge and is currently working in low-paid employment.
