Petition to protect former Thorney Close club passes 1000 signatures

A petition objecting to plans by Sunderland City Council to build new apartments on the site of the former Thorney Close social club has attracted over 1000 signatures from local residents

The plans, revealed last week in a public consultation document, propose demolishing the club, which closed around 2020 and building 24 apartments on it for “for individuals with support needs.”

Local residents have objected to the plans, fearing that it constitutes a “halfway house” and have pointed to section 8 of the consultation document which they argue refuses to rule out the rehousing of sex offenders in the area.

Since then, local councillors for the Sandhill ward, represented by the Liberal Democrats, are also seeking to support wishes by residents to save the former pub building.

Those wishing to sign the petition may do so here.
