New round of North Star Auditions opening

A new round of auditions are opening for the in development Sunderland feature film, the North Star, following a change in producers.

The film, first written in 2022, was originally being managed by New Enterprise Studios (NES) in Southwick, where a development deal was signed in January this year.

However, following a public declaration of financial difficulties by the NES studio with its facility facing closure, and limited progress, screenwriter Tom J. Oswald concluded the development agreement last week and relocated to Teesside based Smoggie Productions, headed by Mark Spayne.

Now, with the new regime underway, certain roles will be reopened for auditions where no solid or leading candidates were secured the first time round. It is understood emphasis on a local and regional cast remains a priority. These roles include:

Liam Heskett: A Hendon based chav. Aged 18-25

Gary Marchant: An eccentric history teacher, aged 40s-50s

Joan Stoddart: A particularly nasty school headmistress, aged 40s-60s

Viviane: The mystical mother of the main character, aged 40s

Tony Radcliff: A wicked Southwick gangster and loan shark (aged 30-40)

Big Kev: The accomplice of Tony, also a gangster (aged 30-40)

William Parker-Fulton: A South of England politician who stands for election in Sunderland. Aged 40-50

Gemma the PE teacher: A PE teacher, aged 30s

Joe Goya: The main character’s elderly, yet upbeat next door neighbour (minor role). She’s 60+

Derek the landlord: A strict and uncompromising pub landlord. Aged 40+

Eddie Scott: The depressed, grumpy and feckless father of the main character, aged 40-50.

The North Star is an epic fantasy film set in Sunderland and the North East of England, which is the first concept of its kind ever created. The story will tell of one girl’s journey to becoming an ancient Northumbrian hero. A novel version is set to be released at the end of this year.
