BREAKING: A five year old boy has been severely injured after being mauled by a “bull breed” dog in a park
A five-year-old boy has been left with horrific facial injuries after being attacked by a dog while playing in a park in Mexborough, South Yorkshire.
The child was with his mother on Schofield Street on Thursday when a bull breed-type dog, reportedly off its lead, “aggressively approached” before mauling his face.
Police said the boy suffered injuries to his eye, ears, and cheeks, which could leave permanent scars. He was rushed to hospital for treatment.
A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of owning a dangerous dog and has since been released on bail, while the animal remains in police kennels.
Inspector Steve Usher from South Yorkshire Police said:
“This incident should never happen and could have been avoided by responsible ownership.
Being a responsible owner is the difference between dogs causing fear and harm in our community.”
Police described the attack as “every parent’s nightmare” and urged the public to ensure dogs are properly restrained in public spaces.
More updates are expected as the investigation continues.
