Charity Event: Walk of the White Rose, Sunderland to Yorkshire

Sunderland Global Media (SGM) is proud to announce its first big charity event of 2025! Starting on February 27th, we will assemble a team to walk together from Wearside to the City of York in a journey southbound spanning over 75 miles. In doing so, we will be raising to raise funds for a worthy local charity, as we did with 2024’s Great North Walk.

February 27th The Colliery Trail: Sunderland to Yarm

Meeting in South Sunderland, we will begin our journey by crossing Doxford Park, going over the A19 bridge and proceeding down the Medieval Hangman’s Line. Cutting across the village of Easington Lane, we will then head down the Ancient Salter’s route spanning the County Durham colliery villages of Haswell, Shotton, Wingate and Station Town. This will soon take us to the Hurworth Burn Railway Path, a former railway route which will take us directly all the way to Stockton-on-Tees, passing the former station of Thorpe Thewles. Circumnavigating Stockton, we will pass through Eaglescliffe and then cross the river Tees into the market town of Yarm, exiting North East England and entering North Yorkshire.

February 28th: Across the Moors Yarm to Helmsley

Leaving Yarm on an early start, we will then enter the North Yorkshire countryside passing one village after the other, including Sexton and Hutton Redby. We will be heading towards the North York Moors, a vast and isolated region with steep hills and rolling valleys. After passing the village of Carlton-in-Cleveland, we will walk up the steep hill known as Carlton Bank and enter the valley of Bilsdale (Norse: Bildur’s Valley). Eventually, we will reach the extremely isolated settlement of Chop Gate and hereafter follow the B1257 southwards directly into Ryedale, up and out of the moors. This route will be treacherous, and when night falls you will experience total darkness, but at the end the road will take us to the historic town of Helmsley, complete with its own castle. We will spend the night at an inn dated from the 1400s. This will be the toughest day, with limited services available enroute. We must make it here before 10pm as the Co-op store will close.

March 1st: Towards York!

Leaving Helmsley, we will head southwards in a relatively straight line crossing the Howardian Hills area of natural beauty, and other ancient villages such as Oswaldkirk and onwards to the grand city of York, famous for its mighty cathedral, city walls and narrow medieval streets in The Shambles. Here, we will rest for the night.

March 2nd: Depart

As York is a suitable transportation hub, we will conclude our event by getting the train back home to Wearside.
