HMRC warns pensioners over Winter Fuel Payment scams as eligibility rules change
Pensioners are being warned to watch out for scams following a government update to Winter Fuel Payment eligibility.
All households in England and Wales with someone over State Pension age will now receive the payment automatically but those earning over £35,000 a year will need to repay it through PAYE or self-assessment.
HMRC has confirmed no texts or emails are sent asking for personal information to claim this benefit. Scammers are exploiting confusion around the changes, prompting an official alert.
Payments are automatic, you do not need to apply, and any messages asking you to do so are likely fraudulent.
