Man Admits Stabbing Partner in Brutal Attack
A Newcastle man has pleaded guilty to wounding with intent after leaving his partner with life-threatening stab injuries to her neck.
Mark Downey, 52, was set to stand trial at Newcastle Crown Court on Wednesday for the attempted murder of Joanne Downey, but instead admitted the lesser charge.
The attack took place on Stotts Road, Walkergate, on Sunday, November 10, where Joanne, in her 50s, suffered severe wounds to her jugular, as well as cuts to her face and chest.
The prosecution accepted Downey’s guilty plea to wounding with intent, and Judge Paul Sloan KC has ordered a pre-sentence report ahead of sentencing in July. Downey, of no fixed address, has been remanded in custody until his sentencing hearing on Friday, July 4, where he faces an immediate prison sentence.
This shocking case adds to concerns over violent domestic incidents in the region.
