Police Officer Jailed for Secret Relationships with Criminals and Leaking Sensitive Data
A former police officer has been jailed after she was caught kissing an inmate in uniform and leaking confidential information to criminals during two illicit relationships.
Choni Kenny, 27, was sentenced to three years and nine months at Liverpool Crown Court for multiple counts of misconduct in public office and conspiracy. She entered into romantic relationships with two offenders — Josh Whelan, who was serving time at Forest Bank Prison, and Rahim Mottley, who was under investigation by Greater Manchester Police.
Kenny was seen on CCTV embracing Whelan during a prison visit while in police uniform and was found to have supplied him with mobile phones. After their relationship ended, she became involved with Mottley, who was later extradited from Spain. She accessed restricted police databases and passed intelligence to him.
An internal anti-corruption investigation led to her arrest. Judge Flewitt said Kenny’s actions stemmed from “naivety and immaturity” rather than financial gain.
Mottley received two years and two months for his role, while Whelan admitted possessing mobile phones in prison.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said Kenny “seriously undermined the integrity of the police service” and was dismissed following a misconduct hearing earlier this month.
