Reports of “traveller” scams taking place around Market Square outside the Bridges harassing passers by

There have been reports of “travellers” conducting scams around the Market Square area of Sunderland City centre.

A number of individuals were photographed and spotted outside of The Bridges this week attempting to peddle counterfeit perfumes and other items to passers by.

They also, by photographic evidence, attempted to solicit sales from people sitting outside of Cafe Nero.

After being monitored carefully, they are believed to be from a traveller community.

It has already been clarified by City Council representatives that the individuals had no legal right or authorisation to do so. This has led to a reported row with the police.

SGM was sent a large portfolio of photographic evidence of the individuals, as well as contact details for the council’s director of trading standards.
