Start date of new Metro Trains delayed AGAIN, as 2024 looks unlikely

The start date for new Tyne-Wear Metro trains to come into operation has been delayed again, casting doubt on the service.

The new trains, which cost £362 million, were manufactured in Switzerland and trialed in Czechia.

But despite that, faults have been detected in the carriages in how they respond to “adverse weather conditions” which means more testing is needed before they are put into use.

Now, it is unlikely even the first train will be in use by the end of 2024.

The service of the Tyne-Wear Metro has been overwhelmingly criticised by the public due to constant cancellations and delays, failure of infrastructure and excessive year on year price rises.
