Sunderland 2-1 Birmingham – Match Report

Sunderland celebrate a hard fought victory against Birmingham City, as they move to within just one point of the play-offs.

Dennis Cirkin saw red just after Sunderland’s winning goal after blocking Chong on the right-hand side and seeing a second yellow.

Birmingham started the game the better of the two sides, and they took the lead in the 29th minute thanks to a goal by George Hall.

Hall couldn’t miss as Chong played it square and he was able to slot the ball home.

Towards the end of the second-half, Sunderland started to put Birmingham under a lot of pressure and saw a concession of corners.

Despite having such a poor record on corners, Sunderland equalised right at the end of the half.

Alex Pritchard took a deep corner towards Danny Batth, who headed to Patrick Roberts, and he flicked it to Trai Hume, who couldn’t miss.

In the second-half, Sunderland saw a lot of possession, without much reward fkr the most part.

Patrick Roberts had a glorious opportunity to get Sunderland infront after being played through by Gelhardt, but he skied it over the bar.

The Black Cats finally scored, what turned out to be, the winner with 15 minutes remaining.

Jack Clarke switched a brilliant ball over to Amad, who cut inside on to his left foot and smashed the ball beyond John Ruddy. Wondergoal!

3 minutes later, Cirkin saw his red card, meaning Sunderland had 12 minutes plus stoppage time to see out the victory.

The players have their all, and they were successful in doing so.

With four games remaining, Sunderland are now just one point away from play-offs.
