Sunderland City Council issues statement on homeless people sheltering in bus stops
Sunderland City Council has issued a statement after photos circulated online showing bus shelters being used as temporary homes by rough sleepers.
Images, which all originated on Sunderland Global Media (SGM) and drove the news cycle, showed a bus stop on Kayll Road containing a bed, chest of drawers, toiletries and a washing line. Another shelter on Kayll Road had a mattress and bedding, with belongings stored on the seat.
The council said homelessness is a “complex issue” and confirmed teams are engaging directly with people sleeping in the shelters. A spokesperson said:
“When people accept temporary accommodation with 24/7 support, it provides more than just a roof – it’s a safer, more stable environment where they can rebuild their lives.”
Homelessness charity workers, including Andrea Bell from Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen, have raised concerns that hostels are full and emergency spaces are limited.
The council stressed that its Housing Options Team is available Monday–Friday, 8.30am–5pm, and operates an out-of-hours service for emergencies. Anyone in need can call 0191 520 5551 or 0800 234 6084.
Officials said their focus is on prevention and early intervention, adding: “By strengthening secure housing and access to support, we’re working to build a fairer Sunderland for all.”
