Teenager Who Stabbed Man in the Heart Now Named After Turning 18
A teenager who fatally stabbed a man in the heart and pushed him into a canal can now be named after turning 18.
Nasir Al-Shumari, of Botham Close, Hulme, was just 16 when he stabbed 33-year-old Ahmed Alsrhan during a violent altercation in Manchester’s Piccadilly Basin on 16 August 2023. Al-Shumari was convicted of murder and section 18 wounding last summer and was detained at His Majesty’s Pleasure, with a minimum term of 14 years. At the time of sentencing, he could not be named due to his age.
Mr Alsrhan had been drinking coffee with friends when he was approached by Mohammed Al-Enizi Hameed. During the ensuing confrontation, Al-Shumari stabbed Mr Alsrhan in the chest and he was subsequently pushed into the Rochdale Canal. Despite managing to climb out, he later collapsed on Dale Street. Emergency services performed open-heart surgery at the scene, but Mr Alsrhan died after suffering severe brain damage.
Al-Shumari’s friend, Sami Alhaj, was also stabbed in the incident. CCTV footage presented in court showed Al-Enizi Hameed’s group confronting Mr Alsrhan’s party, escalating into a physical melee. Prosecutors said Al-Shumari inflicted the fatal wound, while Al-Enizi Hameed pushed the victim into the water.
Minshull Street Crown Court heard that Al-Shumari, though without prior convictions, had previously been caught carrying a knife at school. His defence cited emotional development issues and a traumatic upbringing.
Mr Justice Edward Pepperall described the murder as a “tragic and fatal” act committed in broad daylight, stating that Mr Alsrhan was a “much loved young man simply enjoying a coffee on a summer afternoon”.
Sentences:
Mohammed Al-Enizi Hameed, 36, of Brighton Grove, Rusholme, was sentenced to life with a minimum of 25 years for murder and section 18 wounding.
Nasir Al-Shumari, 18, received a minimum term of 14 years for murder and wounding.
Hussein Muhalhal, 20, of Lower Park Road, Longsight, was jailed for five-and-a-half years for section 18 wounding.
A 17-year-old boy, who remains unnamed for legal reasons, was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in a young offender institution for section 18 wounding.
In a statement, Mr Alsrhan’s family thanked Greater Manchester Police and the CPS for securing justice and said they continue to grieve privately.
